Spun Sugar Gradient Nails

I am not sure how I feel about today's manicure.

The "spun sugar" technique was pretty popular last year but it's hard to make it look great, in my opinion. It's also pretty time consuming to wait for polish to get tacky enough to use.

I used Essie Don't Sweater It as a base, and used China Glaze For Audrey, ORLY White Tips, and a mix of the two for the sugar.

I used two coats of top coat, but it still looks pretty three dimensional. It also bubbled a bit.

What do you think?

  1. I quite like it, but looks like something that would take ages to dry. I hate it when I do my nails before going to bed and in the morning they have sleep wrinkles on.

    1. Surprisingly, it didn't take too long! I had to wait for the polish on top to get gummy and thick before I could use it on my nails so that was most of the waiting time.

    2. IT'S NOT JUST ME!! I've had so many times where I did a "fancy" (fancy for me) design and then go to sleep and there's lines everywhere. I need to get a faster drying top coat :(

    3. Hey Alisa - I've actually read a lot of tips about making sure your manicure is completely dry before you go to bed. I've heard that it takes 12 hours for the polish to completely set so it is still able to be smudged - and warm air makes it take even longer! I have a nail polish dryer but I've heard of some people dipping their nails in ice water or using a blow dryer on the cool setting to help speed things up ;)

  2. Spun sugar nails look way too frustrating for me to ever try! Also I hate the feeling of thick polish on my nails ):
Yours, however, look fantastic! The gradient effect is really awesome and inventive and I love it over the taupe base :)
